Firstly, trust the train. Most are quick and cheap, especially if you buy a Britrail pass before you leave home. Many expresses have a buffet car for drinks and sandwiches and some have full restaurant service.

Let the train take the strain for longer journeys and even with a 70mph speed limit and a motorway system now covering most parts of the country, do not underestimate driving times. Picking up a car at the airport is not usually a good idea: get accustomed a bit first, certainly do not have a car in London, and ideally do longer journeys by train, renting a Godfrey Davis Europcar ‘Raildrive’ car at the end station. There is a British pass that for only a little extra expense allows you unlimited use of trains and car rental, providing you don’t keep the car more than 24 hours. Whether or not you have such a bargain ticket, this is an ideal way of enjoying the richly-varied British countryside without getting tired. Your itinerary can then comfortably be more ambitious.
